The route to the capital
Andorra la Vella is the closest destination in the country: about 200 km from El Prat Airport, around 2 h 50 without traffic. You climb the C-16 through the Cadí tunnel or take the C-14, pass La Seu d’Urgell and cross the border at La Farga de Moles. From there it is barely ten kilometres along the CG-1, through Sant Julià de Lòria, to the edge of the capital.
That last stretch carries more traffic than anywhere else in the country, especially on Saturdays and shopping days. Your driver knows the one-way streets of the centre and how to reach the hotels on Avinguda Meritxell, around Prat de la Creu and in Escaldes.
Planner
What time will you reach your hotel?
Tell us when you land and where you are going. We tell you when you will leave the airport and the window in which you arrive, allowing for the Cadí route, the border and the day’s traffic.

- Border and traffic margin: 0–15 min.
An estimate based on driving times without traffic plus a careful margin. Not official data: no public source publishes waiting times at the Andorran border.

Escaldes, Caldea and shopping
Escaldes-Engordany begins where Andorra la Vella ends, and it is home to many of the hotels in the shopping district and to the Caldea spa. If you are staying there, say so when booking and we will drop you right at the entrance. For a shopping or spa weekend you do not need a car: the centre is easy on foot and the rest of the country is well served by buses.
If you are coming to shop, remember that there are duty-free allowances for tobacco, alcohol and other goods when you go back into Spain. We explain them in our travel guide.
A good base for skiing
From the capital, both big ski areas are close: Grandvalira via Encamp and Canillo, with lifts leaving from the same valley, and Pal Arinsal via La Massana. Many families stay in Andorra la Vella or Escaldes because there is a wider choice of hotels and restaurants, and head up to the slopes each day.
If you are going skiing, tell us how many ski bags you have when booking. Skis or boards are added as special luggage, with their price, and we assign a vehicle where they fit alongside your suitcases.
At the border
Entering Andorra there is a customs check. It is usually quick, but on bank holidays, at Christmas and on Saturday mornings queues build up. Your driver allows for it when estimating your arrival time and lets you know if you need your documents at hand. Bring the ID card or passport of every traveller, children included.
The border
Entering Andorra and coming back: what to know
Andorra is not in the European Union: there is a customs post on the CG-1 (Riu Runer, 848 m), between La Seu d’Urgell and Sant Julià de Lòria. Going in is usually quick; coming back, there are queues on Sunday afternoons and at the end of long weekends.
Going in
- A valid ID card or passport for every passenger, children included.
- If you need a Schengen visa, it must be double or multiple entry: you re-enter the EU on the way back.
- Minors travelling without their parents: their own document and a signed authorisation.
- From 1 November to 15 May, winter equipment is compulsory on every road in Andorra; with snow, colour phases set speed limits.
