Andorra la Vella and Escaldes: centre, shopping and Caldea

The two central parishes form a single town at around 1,000 m. They have the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and shops, and are the most practical base for shopping, business or Caldea. They are about 200 km from El Prat, under three hours without traffic. Transfers: Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany.

For skiing, you go up to the slopes each day from here: to Grandvalira along the CG-2 or to Pal Arinsal via La Massana.

Distances and times from Barcelona airport via the Cadí tunnel (OSRM, without traffic). Approximate altitude of each village.

Sant Julià de Lòria: closest to Barcelona

Sant Julià is the first parish after the border and the lowest. It is the shortest arrival from Barcelona and the quickest departure, although the customs queue starts right on its doorstep. It is home to Naturland, an activity park on the La Rabassa mountain.

Encamp and Canillo: between the centre and Grandvalira

Encamp and Canillo lie in the valley that climbs towards Grandvalira and both have gondolas to the slopes. They are a balanced choice for families and skiers who want more calm than the centre while staying a few minutes from the shops. From El Prat, around three hours without traffic.

Soldeu, El Tarter and Pas de la Casa: ski-in, ski-out

Soldeu and El Tarter, in Canillo, and Pas de la Casa, in Encamp next to the French border, are Grandvalira’s slope-side villages. They are the best choice if you are skiing and want to walk out of the hotel in your boots; the rest of the year they are quieter. They are the longest transfers from Barcelona and, with snow, the Envalira pass can lengthen the trip to Pas de la Casa.

La Massana, Arinsal and Ordino: the quiet valleys

The north-west is quieter. La Massana has a gondola to Pal; Arinsal sits at the head of the valley with its own gondola, and Ordino is the gateway to Arcalís and the Sorteny and Tristaina valleys. They are good bases for hiking in summer and for families in winter.
