Documents to enter Andorra

Andorra is not part of the European Union or the Schengen area, and there is a border check. Every traveller, children included, needs their own identity document: a national ID card or passport for EU citizens, and a passport for everyone else, with whatever visa their nationality requires.

If you need a Schengen visa, bear in mind that entering Andorra means leaving the Schengen area, and returning to Spain means entering it again: check that your visa allows multiple entries. If in doubt, ask the consulate or the Andorran embassy before your trip.

Planner

What time will you reach your hotel?

Tell us when you land and where you are going. We tell you when you will leave the airport and the window in which you arrive, allowing for the Cadí route, the border and the day’s traffic.

  • Pick-up around 13:45: about 45 min to get out of the airport (we wait 60 min free of charge).
  • Driving: 169 to 194 min (200 km).
  • Border and traffic margin: 0–15 min.

Customs: what happens at the border

From Spain you enter Andorra at the La Farga de Moles crossing, just after La Seu d’Urgell. Going in, the check is usually quick. Coming back into Spain, Spanish customs inspect what you carry, because Andorra has a different tax regime and there are duty-free allowances for tobacco, alcohol, perfume, fuel and other goods.

The allowances change from time to time, so check the current ones on the Spanish Tax Agency website before you shop. On bank holidays, at Christmas and on Sunday afternoons queues build up at the border: allow for that if you have a flight to catch.

Luggage and skis: what fits in each vehicle

In the search box you enter passengers, suitcases and, on the ski pages, ski or snowboard bags. With those details we only show you the categories where everything fits, with their seats and capacity. As a rough guide, a saloon suits two or three people with normal suitcases, a van suits families or groups of up to 8 with ski equipment, and larger groups travel in several vehicles.

Ski bags are added as special luggage and charged at the published rate: you see it in the price before paying. Child seats are compulsory below 135 cm; add them when booking. If you bring more luggage than booked, the supplement is agreed with the driver before setting off, so always enter what you are really carrying.

Mountain roads in winter

The routes from Barcelona climb the C-16 and the Cadí tunnel or the C-14 to La Seu d’Urgell, then inside Andorra the CG-1, the CG-2 towards Grandvalira, or the CG-3 and CG-4 towards La Massana and Arinsal. They are main roads kept open in winter, but snowfall slows the traffic.

Andorra requires winter equipment on its roads during the snow season, and in Catalonia the obligation applies wherever the relevant sign is shown on a stretch of road. The Envalira pass, on the way to Pas de la Casa, is the most exposed stretch and can be restricted or closed for a few hours during heavy snow. Before setting off, check road conditions with the Servei Català de Trànsit and the Andorran government’s mobility service.

Choosing your airport and arrival time

Barcelona-El Prat has the most flights and is about three hours from Andorra la Vella. Girona and Reus are alternatives depending on where you fly from, with a similar journey time. If you can choose, a flight landing before midday lets you reach Andorra in daylight, which is welcome in winter.

Saturday is changeover day for much ski accommodation, with more traffic on the climb and at the entrance to the villages. If your trip starts on a Saturday, allow a little extra time.

The border

Entering Andorra and coming back: what to know

Andorra is not in the European Union: there is a customs post on the CG-1 (Riu Runer, 848 m), between La Seu d’Urgell and Sant Julià de Lòria. Going in is usually quick; coming back, there are queues on Sunday afternoons and at the end of long weekends.

Going in

  • A valid ID card or passport for every passenger, children included.
  • If you need a Schengen visa, it must be double or multiple entry: you re-enter the EU on the way back.
  • Minors travelling without their parents: their own document and a signed authorisation.
  • From 1 November to 15 May, winter equipment is compulsory on every road in Andorra; with snow, colour phases set speed limits.

Under-17s have no tobacco or alcohol allowance. Anything above the allowance must be declared at customs.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a passport to go to Andorra from Spain?

EU citizens can enter with a national ID card or a passport. Everyone else needs a passport and, depending on nationality, a visa. Check the requirements for your country before travelling.

Is there a customs check when leaving Andorra?

Yes. Spanish customs check what you carry because there are duty-free allowances. Check the current limits on the Spanish Tax Agency website.

Do the roads to Andorra close in the snow?

The main roads stay open, but heavy snowfall slows the traffic and some high mountain stretches, such as Envalira, can be restricted for a few hours.

Do children need their own documents?

Yes. Every child needs their own ID card or passport, depending on their nationality.
