The route to the Val d’Aran
From Barcelona Airport the road to Baqueira is roughly 300 km and a little over four hours without traffic, depending on the route and the weather. The route leaves the Barcelona area heading west towards Lleida, then climbs into the Pyrenees and reaches the Val d’Aran either through the Vielha tunnel or over the Port de la Bonaigua pass, a high mountain road that can be affected by snow in winter. Your driver chooses the better option on the day, according to the traffic authority’s information.
It is a long drive with a mountain stretch at the end, so we do not plan it tight. If you land late, tell us your flight number: we follow it, wait from the actual landing time and tell you the estimated arrival at your accommodation if the weather or the traffic changes it.
Baqueira, Salardú, Arties or Vielha: where we drop you
The resort has its own villages and they are close to one another. Baqueira (about 1,500 m) is the purpose-built base at the foot of the lifts. Salardú and Arties are traditional Aranese villages a few kilometres down the valley, with hotels and apartments, and Vielha, the capital of the Val d’Aran, is the largest town and has the most shops, restaurants and services. They are all on the same road, and we take you to the entrance of your hotel or apartment; enter the exact address when you book.
Aranese, a variety of Occitan spoken in the Val d’Aran, is an official language in Catalonia alongside Catalan and Spanish, which is why you will see signs in three languages. It does not change anything for your journey: our drivers speak the languages you choose when you book, subject to availability.
Skis, boots and luggage
A ski transfer carries more than an ordinary trip: big suitcases, ski or snowboard bags, boot bags and, with children, child seats. In the search box you add your ski bags as well as your suitcases and we only show the categories where everything fits. Ski bags are charged as special luggage at the published rate, and you see the full price before you pay.
For a group or a family of more than four, the price is per vehicle, not per person, so it usually pays to compare one larger vehicle with two smaller ones. For larger groups, several vehicles can leave together; our ski groups page explains how.
Not only for the ski season
The Val d’Aran is also a summer destination for walkers and cyclists, and the same transfer works all year. In the warm months the road is easier and quicker; in winter, with snow, allow 30 to 45 minutes more than usual and tell us if you have a tight connection. For the journey back to Barcelona Airport, book the return in the same search box and we agree the pick-up time with your flight in mind.
